STUMP BEZOS

The person buying a product in Q4 is often not the person who will use it. What percentage of toy shoppers have NO CHILDREN at home?

💰 RENT YOUR HOUSE to YOUR BIZ for 14 DAYS & OTHER MOVES

You can run a $5 million Amazon business and have nothing in the bank. Pam, a Profit First professional who runs Pivot Business Group (bookkeeping, fractional CFO, tax strategy), sees it every week. Her recent BDSC session was the least glamorous call of the year and probably the most valuable per minute.

Her frame: a tax preparer keeps you compliant. A tax strategist saves you money. If your CPA's only ideas are "buy a 6,000-pound truck" or "prepay some vendors," you have a preparer.

These five moves are the ones she runs first with new clients.

Move one: the Augusta Rule

Section 280A(g) lets you rent your primary residence to your own business for up to 14 days a year, and that rental income is tax-free to you while being deductible to the business. It works whether you own or rent. Use it for planning sessions, board meetings, product photo and video shoots, team trainings.

Do it right: find fair market value (what a comparable Vrbo, Airbnb, or the local hotel's conference room charges per day). Document each day with the date, who attended, and the purpose. Invoice your business. The business pays you directly, never through a 1099 or W-2.

The math: $1,000 a day times 14 days is $14,000 tax-free, worth about $4,200 in a 30% bracket. Pam has a client in Orange County doing $3,500 a day. Kevin's note: a downtown Austin place during a big event weekend like F1 rents for far more.

Move two: the accountable plan (S-corp only)

Your business reimburses you for personal-card expenses that served the business. Home office: the square-footage percentage times your monthly home costs (mortgage interest, utilities, cleaning).

A 10% office in a home costing $10,000 a month is $1,000 a month back. Add cell phone, business meals, travel, car use. Run it through payroll in the pre-tax box. Most of her clients find about $1,200 a month, which is $14,400 a year tax-free.

The one rule: never pay personal expenses from the business account. That pierces the veil and the whole thing falls apart.

Move three: know your entity

A single-member LLC pays 15.3% self-employment tax on top of your bracket. An S-corp election typically saves high-six and seven-figure sellers $20,000 to $80,000 a year. Higher earners look at C-corp structures and multi-entity setups.

Homework tonight: find out what tax status you actually have. A surprising number of sellers don't know.

Move four: four bank accounts

Traditional accounting is Sales minus Expenses equals whatever's left. Profit First flips it: Sales minus Profit equals what you're allowed to spend. Pam runs it with four accounts for e-commerce.

Income (everything lands here). Profit and Tax (your reward plus the tax set-aside). Inventory Fund (pre-funded so you can grab a pallet deal when it shows up). OpEx (payroll, software, ads).

Two reasons it saves you. A candle client bought discounted bulk pallets at the right time of year out of the inventory fund without raiding operating cash. Another client got hit with $35,000 in chargebacks against the income account; the money had already been moved out, so the merchant had nothing to claw back.

And "$10K in the bank" turns into "$2K profit, $2K inventory, $6K OpEx," which is the first time most sellers know what they can actually spend.

Move five: profit by product, every time

Her spice-shelf client did six figures a month on his top SKU. It was tanking his margin, and the other two SKUs were quietly carrying it. Fix: cut ad spend on the loser and change its fulfillment.

Ad dollars go to profitable SKUs only. If a SKU can't make margin, kill it or move it to another platform. Shop your 3PL every year (one client saved 16% on warehouse space by switching).

And price from the bottom up: desired profit plus fixed costs plus variable costs is your minimum price. If competitors sell at $10 and your math says $15, don't sell that SKU. Selling more at a loss just makes you broke faster.

Housekeeping that makes all of this possible: a P&L and balance sheet by the 15th of every month, or fire the bookkeeper. Know your gross and net margin. If you don't, drop the reports into Claude and ask.

Every deduction passes one test: "ordinary and necessary." Ask it of every expense. And run all of this past a strategist who knows e-commerce, because the details matter more than a newsletter can cover.

ExpandFi Shows You What Each Customer Is Really Worth

Your dashboard says revenue is up. But who bought it?
Sales can climb while new customers shrink, and a tight ACoS can hide it.

ExpandFi connects Amazon, Shopify and Walmart, then finds the customers behind your sales. You see what each one cost to acquire and what they earned you over time.

What You Get

  • 85+ ready-made reports. No SQL, no spreadsheets.

  • New Customers & CAC. Stop managing ACoS. Manage what a new customer actually costs.

  • LTV:CAC. If customers pay you back several times over in 12 months, you’re probably under-spending.

  • The Spend Curve. Shows whether to push or pull back ad spend on each product.

  • Your own database. Every plan includes read-only access to 40+ cleaned tables. Plug in Tableau, Excel or your own app.

  • Built-in MCP. Ask Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini questions about your business in plain English.

According to ExpandFi, Amazon deletes customer transaction data after 18 months, and Walmart only gives you 180 days. ExpandFi stores your history in your own warehouse, so you keep it.

🚀 HOW to GET the AMAZON BADGE WORTH +12% in SALES

There's a free badge on Amazon that delivers a +12% sales lift on average, and up to 28% in some categories.

It costs nothing to apply for. Amazon verifies it, so you can't buy your way in. Shoppers actively filter for it.

So why don't most sellers have it?

Because qualifying is a math problem disguised as a sustainability program, and nobody walks you through the math.

Here it is. (Credit to Alina Vlaic at The Ranking Pill for the breakdown behind this piece.)

What it actually is

Climate Pledge Friendly (CPF) is Amazon's program for products with verified sustainability attributes. The green leaf is the visible part. Underneath, you get:

  • A badge on search results and product pages

  • A filter shoppers use to narrow results to qualifying products only

  • Dedicated storefronts and recommendation placements

  • Algorithmic visibility boosts in certain categories

Amazon's own data: enrolled products see an average +12% sales lift. Top categories see 18% to 28%. The only barrier is meeting the criteria.

The spread matters more than the average

Amazon's program data covers 17 product categories. Lift runs from 7% at the low end to 28.3% at the top, and the program average is 12%. The two best categories land at 24.1% and 28.3%.

If you sell in one of the top categories and don't have the badge, you're leaving real revenue on the table every week.

The easiest way in: Compact by Design

Dozens of certifications earn the badge: Fair Trade, USDA Organic, Cradle to Cradle and more. Most need third-party audits, paperwork and months of process.

Compact by Design doesn't. It's Amazon's own certification, and you qualify on the dimensions and weight of your packaging. Pure math.

\text{Unit efficiency} = \left(\frac{L \times W \times H}{\text{units}}\right) \times \left(\frac{\text{weight}}{\text{units}}\right)

If your number is below the category threshold, you qualify. Lower means more product per cubic inch of shipping space.

Amazon's own example, a 20 fl. oz. liquid shampoo (inches, pounds):

What to do this week

  1. Check your category. Is your product type in the table above?

  2. Measure. Get exact dimensions, weight and unit count for your top ASIN.

  3. Run the formula. (L × W × H ÷ units) × (weight ÷ units).

  4. Compare the result to your category threshold.

  5. Under it? Apply in Seller Central under Climate Pledge Friendly.

  6. Over it? Ask your supplier about reducing packaging. A small dimension change can flip a product from "doesn't qualify" to "qualifies."

Already have a certification?

Compact by Design is the fastest, cheapest way in. But Amazon accepts 50+ third-party certifications, including USDA Organic, Fair Trade, GOTS, Cradle to Cradle and EU Ecolabel. If your product already carries one, check Seller Central. You may already qualify and not know it.

Most sellers see the leaf on a competitor's listing and move on. They assume it's about values, or it's hard to get, or it's not for them. It's a +12% average sales lift on a free badge. That's a ranking decision.
